Fam & a Half · DH Website Services
Fam & a Half lets you share your location with people you choose. This page explains what we collect, who sees it, how long we keep it, and how to delete it. Last updated 8 October 2026.
Fam & a Half is provided by David Hooper Home Limited, trading as DH Website Services (company number 17018784), Pontypridd, Wales. We are the data controller for the personal data described here. You can contact us about privacy at [email protected].
| Data | Why | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | To create your account, sign you in, and email you confirmation and password-reset codes | Until you delete your account |
| Name, and an optional photo or emoji | So your circles can recognise you | Until you change it or delete your account |
| Mobile number (optional) | So people in your circles can call or text you from the map. Only they can see it | Until you remove it or delete your account |
| Your latest location, battery level, and whether you're walking, cycling or driving | The core of the app: showing your circles where you are | Replaced as you move. Removed when you delete your account |
| Location history | Only if you turn it on, so you can look back over your day | 1 to 30 days, which you choose |
| Journey trail (the line behind you on the map while you travel) | Shown to people who can see your precise location, only while you are travelling | Deleted 24 hours after the journey ends |
| Journey summaries (distance, time, top speed, hard braking) | Arrival notifications. Driving summaries are only shown to your circles if you turn them on | Until you delete your account |
| Places, check-ins, ETAs, SOS alerts and arrival checks | The safety features you use | Until the circle or your account is deleted |
| Device push tokens and phone status (location permission, Low Power Mode) | To send notifications, to ask your phone for a fresh location when someone opens the map or your phone has gone quiet, to remind you if your own sharing has stopped, and to tell your circles if sharing has stopped working | Until you sign out, or 90 days unused |
| Upload diagnostics (when your phone last sent a location, what triggered it, and its battery level, with no coordinates) | To find and fix phones that stop updating, and to measure the app's battery use | 3 days |
| Crash and freeze reports from iOS (where in the app it went wrong, your app and iOS version, with no location) | To find and fix bugs | 90 days |
| “Who’s checked on me” (who opened your details, and when) | Shown only to you, so you can see who’s been looking | 30 days |
| Pick-up requests (your note and where you were when you asked) | So your circle can come and get you | Until the circle or your account is deleted |
| Reports you send us (a problem, or about a person in your circle) | To help you and to keep people safe | 12 months after it’s resolved |
| Beta sign-ups from this website (first name and email) | Only to send you a TestFlight invite and beta updates. Never used for marketing | Deleted when the beta ends |
| Security and audit logs | To keep accounts secure and investigate abuse | Up to 12 months |
Our lawful bases under UK GDPR are performing our contract with you (running the service you signed up for), your consent for optional features such as location history and your phone number, and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and working.
If you allow "Always" location, Fam & a Half collects your location while the app is closed so your circles see where you are. If your phone has gone quiet, our server can also ask iOS for one location from your phone even when the app isn't running (Apple's "location push"); this only happens while you are sharing, and never while you have paused. It stops whenever you pause sharing or set a circle to "Off". Crash detection uses your phone's motion sensors on the phone itself while you're driving; sensor data is not uploaded.
We use these companies to run the service. They only process data on our instructions:
We don't sell or rent personal data, and we don't share it with advertisers or data brokers. We would only disclose it if the law requires us to.
Under UK GDPR you can also ask us to access, correct, restrict or move your data, or object to how we use it. Email us and we'll reply within one month. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
You must be 13 or over to create a Fam & a Half account. If you're a parent and believe your child under 13 has an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Data is encrypted in transit, access is limited to people in a circle with you, and every request is checked on our servers, not just in the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we design Fam & a Half to collect as little as it needs.
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
